It's been a while since I was able to post. I went back to work full time & we've had a period of adjustment. Our son has gone through several adjustments this fall. Besides me going back to work, my husband was forced to retire. So now we have a working mom & stay at home dad. Our son seems to be handling the changes very well. He & his dad have a great relationship, so he enjoys extra time with him. We just received the 2nd report card for the year. He made the B Honor Roll both times this year! He has had some struggles with a few subjects this year. Algebra I has been his toughest with it's abstract concepts. He is so black & white. His business class required him to wear a suit for a project. That was major!! Most children I know with Asperger's are pretty sensitive to the type of clothes they wear. Our son likes to wear elastic waist pants & shirts with crew necks. He wore the suit, though, & did a good job on the project! We are so very proud of him for stepping out of his comfort zone. It's a difficult thing for any of us to do, but especially someone with Asperger's. I can see such growth in him & am amazed at times!
He is learning about relationships now from a very different source. He watches "Wife Swap" every day & learns about how different families interact. We've had some interesting discussions after an episode. At first I wasn't sure what to think about him watching that show. After thinking about it, though, I can see him taking in some of it & learning about people. He is really beginning to desire spending time with kids his own age away from school, which is great! He has friends at school, but not at home. My hope is that after the weather breaks this spring we will see a change in this area.
He had his first heartbreak this fall, too. He handled it ok. This is another sign of him reaching outside himself, which is a good thing. Although, it broke my heart to watch him go through that time. It's so amazing to watch him grow into a young man. My prayer is that he will grow into the man that God would have him to be. He has many hopes & dreams, and I pray that he will be able to have at least some of them fulfilled.
