More History

Hello. I said early on that I would share some of our story from over the years. I've been thinking about things I would like to share. When the school first evaluated our son & met with us to discuss his educational needs, I began learning a lot about how school systems work. There was a definite need for him to be in speech therapy. His speech was very robotic & his social interaction was minimal. He has made tremendous progress in both areas, but still has much work to do in the social area. The one area I have felt he needs help in, but the school disagreed, was occupational therapy. He has a difficult time with fine motor skills. I have learned things over the years that we can do on our own as putting him in therapy on our own would be extremely costly. Insurance doesn't cover much on therapies. I have learned over the years so things that can be done at home. I will try to explain one. You take coins, have your child put them in one, then place each coin between their fingers on that hand & drop them into the other hand. I hope this made sense. This last year I had to have physical therapy for my back. While in therapy I learned some great exercises for coordination. Many of them utilize an exercise ball. You can probably talk with a therapist or look up different exercises online to do this. I say this because I am not a therapist & I don't want to mislead anyone.
Another thing I've noticed about my son is it is very hard for him to open up about himself. I've learned different ways of helping him to open up. One thing we do is he & his dad go for long walks outside on trails. They have nice long talks. When I want to talk with him, I sit in a quiet room with him & we talk. I have to ask him probing questions & get very specific. He will open up, but I have to be patient. Sometimes it takes more than one conversation to get him to share.
Well, that's all I'll share for now.
