What a summer we had! My "angel eyes" (as I've called him since he was an infant) turned 16; so he & I took a trip to New York City for his birthday. We had a great time! We did get a bit confused with the subway system. It's much easier getting around Chicago. We walked all over Central Park; saw the American Museum of Natural History; the Bronx Zoo; took a boat ride down the Hudson past the Statue of Liberty; went to the WTC site & the museum across the street. It was a busy 4 days. The best part was spending time, just the 2 of us. We had many good talks. He isn't usually very good about opening up with me, but we had time to really connect--as much as he allowed. I so enjoyed this time with my young man. It's hard to watch him grow up. I pray that as he does he will gain the knowledge & ability he needs to really be independent. As with any child with special needs, we don't know how far he will go. I don't want to sell him short. He's a smart kid with some good ideas. We do live in a very social world, though, & this is his biggest struggle. I hope he will find the right fit for his future & good opportunities to be able to follow his heart. This is something all parents hope for all of their children; it can be more difficult for some than others. He has overcome much in his life; he has a strong mind & knows what he likes. Follow your heart, my son.
