We had our annual IEP (Individual Education Plan) meeting at school this month. Each year we meet with his Teacher of Record & Guidance Counselor. We discussed what courses he should look toward taking in his Junior year. I can't believe we're only 2 1/2 years from being done with High School! We keep trying different courses to see what he might like to do after High School. So far we haven't hit on anything. If only there were classes in Ancient warfare. (lol) His freshman year we tried some business & computer courses. He loves playing on the computer, but has no desire to work in a business using one. This year we've tried drama classes. He loves movies & knows a lot about actors, producers & directors. He's learning he doesn't want to be an actor. So for next year we're looking at the opportunity to work in the Print Shop during part of the school day to learn a trade. He's not thrilled with this idea. He wants to work at the National Lakeshore with the Rangers. If they had a work-study program we would sign him up, but they don't. He can still do his volunteer work with them in their Parkids program, which he loves! He would get school credit for working in the Print Shop & could possibly get a summer job there. We're going to go check it out next month during an open house to see how it all works. Another good thing about this, he would have fewer classes during school. This would take up 3 hours of class time. I would've loved this when I was in school! We are really trying to encourage him to do this as my husband & I think he might actually enjoy the work. We also know he needs to learn something about what "work" is like. He will be an adult soon & is going to need to learn how to support himself. We don't know at this point how far he will be able to go, but we want to give him every opportunity we can to give him options for his future. We know we will not always be here to take care of him. Our prayer as parents is that he will be able to support himself financially as an adult & have a strong walk of Faith. |
